FINE CONFEDERATE FAYETTEVILLE RIFLE. This is a fine “as found” Fayetteville rifle that was actually found and must have been a souvenir of a Civil War soldier where it has stayed in an attic for over 100 years. This gun is 100% complete, original and authentic in every regard. The gun exhibits beautiful red color to the wood and nice, dark untouched steel. The brass mountings have an untouched dark mustard patina. The original ram rod, sling swivels and rear sight is present which are often missing on other guns. There are traces of original brown finish to bbl in protected areas. The bbl is dated “1864” and properly proofed “P/V/eagle head”. Forward of hammer on lock is a spread-winged eagle above the letters “CSA”. Forward of this marking is “FAYETTEVILLE” rear of hammer is the date “1863”. Opposite of the lock there is a vertical cartouche with indiscernible inspector initials. Butt plate is correctly surcharged “CSA”. CONDITION: Metal overall is brown, rusted and pitted. Brass mountings are smooth with even patina throughout. Markings are all discernible but bbl date and lock markings are all hard to read (but all characters are there). The bbl which was originally rifled in .58 cal. is now smooth, rusted and .61 cal. The stock has good red patina color overall with numerous small gouges, nicks and scratches, partially obliterating inspector’s cartouche and one 2″ chip of wood is re-glued behind breech. 4-39974 JS57 (7,000-10,000)
