EXTREMELY RARE CONFEDERATE MARKED “C.L. DRAGOONS” COLT 3RD MODEL DRAGOON PERCUSSION REVOLVER. SN 18511. Cal. 44. Usual configuration with rare 8″ oct to rnd bbl, German silver front sight and 1-line New York City address. Left side of frame has a forward stamped tiny “COLTS PATENT”. Brass trigger guard & back strap contain a 1-pc walnut grip with last four digits of SN in back strap channel. Top left flat of the bbl lug is marked “C.L. DRAGOONS.” Not a lot has been previously reported about this unit except that it was an Alabama militia unit called the CROCHERON LIGHT DRAGOONS which was mustered into Confederate service as Capt. Holloway’s company of Alabama cavalry. This marking, coupled with the rare 8″ bbl and the all brass grip frame makes this truly an exceptionally rare dragoon. A brief internet search disclosed a wealth of information about the Crocheron Light Dragoons, summarized as follows: The unit was raised and financed by Robert W. Smith, a wealthy merchant & plantation owner of Dallas County, Alabama, initially as a militia unit. They were mustered into the Confederate Army as Company K, 3rd Alabama Cavalry and almost immediately saw action at Shiloh as Gen. Braxton Bragg’s escort under Capt. Edwin M. Holloway. The unit was highly praised by Gen. Bragg in his after action report. Apparently the Crocheron Light Dragoons continued in service through the remainder of the war. CONDITION: Fine, all matching including wedge, cyl & grip. Bbl, cyl & frame retain an overall dark plum/brown patina with the cyl somewhat lighter and retains 25-30% dragoon/Indian fight scene with “MODEL U.S.M.R.” mostly legible. Hammer screw appears to be a replacement. Trigger guard & back strap retain traces of orig silver plating in sheltered areas being mostly a light mustard patina. Grip is sound showing heavy wear with a dark hand worn patina, light nicks & scratches and traces of orig finish. Tip of wedge spring is broken, otherwise mechanics are fine, strong dark bore. 4-40688 JR165 (35,000-45,000)
