RARE TINNED 1ST MODEL LEMAT. Cal. 42/18 ga., SN92. This beautiful gun retains over half of its original finish. It appears 100% original and authentic in every regard. All parts normally serial numbered are serial numbered “92” with exception of cyl which is serial numbered “83”, which, based on patina and surfaces no doubt has been with this gun since it was originally used. Among these Belgian-made first models, there are noted important persons associated. Serial number 8 belonged to Colonel Thomas Anderson of Savannah, Georgia. Serial Number 88 belonged to Major General John Lawson Lewis. And serial number 115 belonged to General Jeb Stuart. Other tin plated guns belonged to Confederate naval personalities such as John Maffit and at least a couple tin guns were captured from Confederate naval vessels. This is a rare, completely original, high condition Confederate 1st model LeMat that is rarely seen. This gun is mentioned or pictured in several books including Forgett & Serpette’s book entitled, “LeMat: The Man, The Gun” (pictured on page 192). This gun has been in collections of two pioneering Confederate collectors originally Dr. Emile Ventre of New Orleans who originally acquired it from a local family and later to Fred and Nancy Edmunds. A letter of provenance and authentication is accompanied from Fred Edmunds. CONDITION: Mechanically hammer holds cock easily, however gun will index only part of the time. The bore is very good with good, discernible rifling. Surfaces of gun are very good and smooth overall with probably half of the original plating retained. Other areas are stained with scattered areas of minor pitting. The un-serialized latch which holds the loading arm, appears repaired or replaced. There is a braised repair to tip of hammer. Checkered stocks are very good, showing slight shrinkage and thin gap as seen in pictures. Surfaces show a few minor nicks and scratches. 4-40820 JS50 (35,000-50,000)
