CONFEDERATE SPILLER & BURR REVOLVER. Cal. 36, SN 903. This gun has a beautiful mustard colored frame with “CS” stamped on left side. The bbl is serial number 903 under loading arm. Another Spiller & Burr number was stamped through, it appears they tried to stamp the serial number over the original Spiller & Burr number, it didn’t work so they stamped the number behind it. Serial number 903 also is found on frame twice (once internally and once externally) and trigger guard. The stocks are lighter wood than normally seen on Spillers and they are a bit more bulbous where they attach to the frame. The original brass stock escutcheons appear original as does the connecting screw. There is a small “H” stamped inside brass and there is an identical small “H” stamped on butt of left stock. There is an indiscernible pencil mark inside one stock, possibly serial number. The loading arm and arbor are serial numbered 903, however the die stamp is not Spiller & Burr. Cylinder is not serial numbered. This gun has been in several well-known collections including that of Fred Slaton, of Nebo, Kentucky. He sold the gold in 1969 to Cecil Anderson of Atlanta, Georgia. This gun was sold by Turner Kirkland in 1989. CONDITION: Bbl and cylinder have been cleaned and are now gray with scattered areas of staining and pitting. Hammer and loading assembly have a darker appearance with scattered areas of pitting. Screws appear original with exception of screw that has replaced the latch. The stocks have probably been replaced at some point in their life, though the original escutcheons are still present. The loading assembly shows signs of a removed serial number, probably Whitney with new “903” added to arm and arbor. 4-40759 JS40 (14,000-16,000)
