CONFEDERATE 1ST MODEL GRISWOLD REVOLVER.

CONFEDERATE 1ST MODEL GRISWOLD REVOLVER. Cal. 36, SN1361. This gun appears original and authentic. The defining difference between first and second models is the round bbl housing on 1st models and half oct bbl housing of the second models. This gun is interesting that this gun has had the bbl housing filed flat which has been seen on a few other guns, perhaps for better sighting. Serial number 1361 is found on bbl housing, frame, and cyl. Secondary number “11” is found on loading arm, trigger guard and backstrap and bottom of left stock. Gun appears all original with exception of replaced wedge and wedge screw. A Roman numeral “XXVIII” is found on left side of frame and right side of backstrap. A cryptic reversed letter “N” is found on bottom of bbl (near loading arm), back of cyl, backstrap, frame and trigger guard. The twisted iron so often associated with Samuel Griswold’s manufacturer in his cylinders is quite evident with twisted lines seen here in cyl. This gun was once in the collection of pioneer Confederate collector and authority, William Albaugh. CONDITION: Mechanically gun functions well. Rifling in bore is discernible though pitted. Other iron surfaces, incl bbl and cyl are gray/black with large areas of staining and pitting. The wedge and wedge screw are replacements. Brass frame, trigger guard and backstrap show good yellow patina through old cleaning with numerous scattered dings, scrapes and scratches. Stocks are solid with the normal scattered dings, gouges and scratches. There are two “X’s carved in bottom of stocks. There are numerous small dings in bottom of stock and butt of backstrap due to gun’s use as a tack hammer. These marks partially obliterate the secondary number “11” on bottom of stocks. 4-40761 JS47 (14,000-18,000)
