CONFEDERATE GRISWOLD 1ST MODEL REVOLVER. Cal. 36, SN551. This gun appears all original, authentic and complete. The serial number “551” being found on bbl housing, cylinder, frame, backstrap and trigger guard. The wedge with spring removed, appears original to time of use of gun however appears to be from a Colt with serial number 0946. A secondary number “11” is found stamped on loading arm and bottom of right stock. A cryptic reversed “G” is found on bottom of bbl (near bbl housing), on back of cylinder, right side of backstrap and on right side of trigger guard under stocks. A cryptic “E” is found on left side of frame under stocks. Early 1st model Griswolds are scarce. Survival of guns in the 500 serial range is only 5 or 6 guns. These earliest Griswolds rarely had Roman numerals and saw a lot of use. This gun is a good, honest example that functions mechanically well. CONDITION: Metal surfaces are gray overall with scattered staining and pitting. Brass components exhibit a good yellow patina. All markings including serial numbers are well struck and easily seen. Stocks overall are very good. Secondary number easily seen. Stocks fit well and retain some original varnish with areas of scattered nicks, dings and scratches. As noted earlier, the wedge is from a Colt, but appears possibly to be fitted during its time of use for this firearm. All screws appear original with the exception of the wedge screw. 4-40691 JS37 (17,500-20,000)
