CLARK AND SHERRARD “TEXAS ARMS COMPANY” PISTOL. Cal 44, SN249. These rare pistols were produced in Lancaster, Texas near the end of the Civil War and just after. This gun is etched on the top of the bbl housing and reads “CLARK,SHERRARD & CO/LANCASTER TEXAS”. This etched panel on bbl is just barely discernible on this gun. However, the etched cylinder with Texas star surrounded by the words “TEXAS ARMS” and other military motifs is very fine. There are considerable articles concerning these guns in The Texas Gun Collector and a chapter in William Gary’s 1987 book, “Confederate Revolvers“. Mr. Gary in his book, only knew of four etched cyl guns, those being serial numbers 115, 231, 249 and 288. This gun is serial numbered 249 on bbl and frame. Cyl is also numbered 249 but also has another serial number which appears to read “297”. The loading arm is numbered 189. The arbor is numbered backwards “179”. There are no external serial numbers on the brass trigger guard or backstrap, but these parts and well fitted stocks appear orig to gun. Small brass shim has been fitted between the frame and bbl housing. This is a rarely offered gun, listed by serial number by Bill Gary as one of only four original etched cyl guns known to him in 1987. CONDITION: Metal surfaces cleaned, now gray with staining, pitting and scattered dents and dings. Stocks retain portions of heavy varnish in some areas. Stocks have several small dents and dings, esp at butt. Etched bbl address is only partially visible if glinted at the right angle in the light. Cyl etching is worn and has areas of pitting but is mostly quite discernible. Wedge, which is un-serialized, appears to be a modern replacement. Mechanically, gun functions quite well for its age. 4-40649 JS44 (30,000-40,000)
