RARE AND IMPORTANT HOWARD & DAVIS “NO. 1” WALL REGULATOR. Circa 1850, Boston, Massachusetts. The birch and mahogany case of typical form with half-round moldings throughout and with black and gilt gold eglomise throat and base glass. The hinged upper door opening to the original printed paper-on-zinc dial, the dial marked “Howard & Davis, Boston”. The diamond hands beneath a sweep seconds subsidiary dial with winder beneath “20”. All within a Roman Numeral chapter ring. The case stamped with cabinet maker’s lot number “23”. The regulator retains original brass movement and pendulum. The movement characterized by trapezoidal plates, dead beat escapement, butterfly bridge and with idler gear on left side. Pendulum retains original gilt wood rod. Movement appears to be unsigned. Reference: An example of this wall regulator is illustrated in “Willard’s Patent Time Pieces”, by Paul J. Foley page 163, plates 384, 385. SIZE: 49-1/2″ h. CONDITION: The dial with losses to paper at fastening apertures and in several areas throughout the dial as seen in photograph. Dial with overall fine craquelure. Movement appears clean and intact. The grained case with old surfaces. The eglomise throat panel original but cracked in a crescent form, running twelve to four o’clock. Glue blocks in box base original, but rejoined with an excess of glue. Single weight appears original and present. Clock is offered with winder, weight and pendulum.
