SCARCE WALCH 10-SHOT DBL HAMMERS SPUR TRIGGER REVOLVER. SN 2892. Cal. 31. Rare & unusual 10-shot revolver with 3-3/4″ oct bbl, open top design with 2″ cylinder having five chambers with ten nipples at the rear. Top flat of bbl has the usual Walch maker’s name & address with patent date. It is configured with two side-by-side hammers that align with two of the nipples simultaneously with one hammer being slightly offset to the right. Both hammers are cocked simultaneously which rotates the cyl to a locked position and when the trigger is pulled it fires the right hand hammer which strikes the nipple firing the forward superposed load in the chamber. A second pull discharges the left hand hammer. This revolver has iron frame with square-butt grip and 2-pc smooth walnut grips numbered to this revolver. Only about 3,000 of these revolvers were produced in the period 1860-1862 for the Walch Firearms Co. by the New Haven Arms Co. at the factory where Oliver Winchester was producing the Henry rifle. These revolvers were private purchased by officers & soldiers during the Civil War and one entire outfit, I Company of the 9th Michigan Infantry was armed with this revolver. They gave it favorable comments but other comments were not so complimentary. See Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms number 7A-117. CONDITION: Very good to fine, all matching including grips with the wedge & cyl unnumbered. Overall retains a smooth dark brown attic patina with a few spots of light pitting around recoil shield. Mechanics are fine, strong frosty bore. 4-36896 JR143 (3,000-5,000)
