IMPORTANT AESTHETIC MOVEMENT HERTER BROTHERS 8-PIECE INLAID WALNUT PARLOR SUITE. Third quarter 19th century, New York. Comprising a triple back settee, pair of gentleman’s armchairs, three smaller lady’s armchairs and pair of side chairs. Four chairs with pillow cresting, the others each inlaid with a Classical urn within a foliate wreath on an ebonized rosette. The back with marquetry panels of floral vinery, the stiles each with stylized Ionic columns, the armchairs continuing with curved pads on scrolled supports, the grips each with Classical lion’s mask, also on foliate supports, centering rectangular overupholstered seats with bowed frontal seat rail, each frieze with marquetry vinery centering a shaped tablet with incised gilt floral bouquet. Each chair raised on incurved legs with scrolled volutes, the fronts with free standing leaf tips terminating in hairy paw feet raised on casters. Upholstered overall in early, if not original, green velvet fabric, the backs tufted. SIZE: Settee: 41″ h of back x 72″ l x 31″ d approx. Gentleman’s chair: 42″ h of back x 28″ w. Lady’s chair: 37-1/2″ h of back x 24-1/2″ w. Side chair: 38″ h of back x 22″ w. CONDITION: Wood surfaces of frames showing cleaned original finish. Marquetry intact, crisp and of fine quality.
