CONFEDERATE IMPORT BRASS HILT M-1853 CAVALRY SABER. This distinct, brass hilt copy of the British iron hilt 1853 enlisted cavalry saber is known only in the Confederacy with all noted specimens made by “Mole” and “Mole” is stamped on spine of blade near ricasso. This is a fine example of this pattern with a bright 35″ blade. This example is missing its protective leather washer and the “Mole” makers mark is deeply stamped in the hilt, under where washer would have been. Correct metal scabbard is stamped on the drag “”star”/TC”. Compressed leather, checkered grips are intact. Brass hilt is nicely patinaed. Often with this pattern the large fragile branches of hilt are cracked or broken. This example, the hilt is perfect. SIZE: 35″ blade. CONDITION: Blade is white/bright showing old sharpening along cutting edge with scattered rust and pitting. Brass hilt exhibits numerous small scratches, scrapes and nicks under mustard colored patina. Leather slab grips are worn, though still showing most of their orig checkered finish with numerous scuffs and scrapes and some shrinkage and pulling away, as can be seen in pictures. Scabbard is smooth and solid with some areas of orig shine showing through a mostly heavy patinaed and pitted scabbard. Markings, including Mole and “star”/TC are easily seen, as in photos. 4-40707 JS9 (3,000-5,000)
