PALMETTO ARMORY CAVALRY SABER. This is a fine example of a the South Carolina state contract sold by William Glaze of Columbia, SC in the early 1850’s. This example has all the proper characteristics, including the proper “Columbia SC” on ricasso with its various broken dies. All structure pertinent to this model cavalry saber are found here including the single pin scabbard. The 36″ blade is in fine condition as is its scabbard, which like the rest of the sword appears “as found” with scattered areas of rust and patina. Hilt is well patinaed as are the areas of broken wire that wrap the grip. really untouched examples of this sword are difficult to find and this is a fine example with no restoration other than the apparent field repaired grip wire, as can be seen in the photos. SIZE: 36″ blade. CONDITION: Sword overall is sound and tight. Blade is gray with scattered areas of staining, rust and pitting. Hilt exhibits patina under old cleaning. Scabbard has areas of orig brown finish under large areas of crusted rust and pitting. Orig grip, which is cord wrapped retains about 90% or its orig leather. Wire is broken in two places and at least the last three wraps appear to be from another piece of wire, but could easily be contemporary to the time of use of this sword. 4-40699 JS8 (4,000-5,000)
