CONFEDERATE FOOT OFFICER’S SWORD MADE BY BOYLE & GAMBLE OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA. This sword exhibits a 29″ blade with unstopped fuller with etched panels, a large “CSA” is etched in one panel as can be seen in photos. The leather grip is typical of products of this manufacturer being originally white leather that was dyed black as can be seen through worn areas showing orig white color. Orig single brass wire wrap is tight and complete. Accompanying brass mounted leather scabbard could be orig to the time and use of this sword, however the scabbard is not a product of Boyle & Gamble, but the patinas to the top brass scabbard mount and hilt are similar. CONDITION: Gray blade has 15″ etched panels that are mostly discernible only if sword is glinted at angle in light. Blade has scattered areas of staining and pitting over most of its length and some re-sharpening at the point. Grip wrap is almost all intact with only a couple small areas less than 1/4″ worn through to wood. Wire wrap is complete and tight. Brass hilt and scabbard mounts exhibit numerous small scratches and dings. Middle mount appears orig to scabbard with good patina whereas top mount appears orig but has less patina and gilt in protected areas. Sword rings appear identical in size and color. Scabbard is missing its drag. 4-40708 JS13 (4,000-6,000)
