CONFEDERATE MCELROY FOOT OFFICER’S SWORD. This is a beautiful example of the branched hilt variant foot officer’s sword by William J. McElroy of Macon, GA. This sword appears in fine condition exhibiting a 29-1/2″ blade which is 1-1/8″ wide at ricasso. The blade is full firm marked in one panel, “J W MCELROY & CO/MACON, GEORGIA”. This sword also exhibits a very unusual folky “CS” and decorated border. Whimsical floral vines make up the rest of the blade etch which runs in 15″ panels on each side. The etching is deep and well done and all discernible. The blade is a typical product manufactured in Macon, GA, with a square stopped fuller typical of this manufacturer. The grip is spirally cut with leather wrap with twisted brass wire. The pommel cap is almost plain with just residual floral decoration on one side. CONDITION: Blade is gray with scattered pitting and staining etched patterns are very good with some lightness, only 1″ to 1-1/2″ past ricasso. Leather grip is complete with scuffing at high areas and where loose wire has scuffed in folds. Back of pommel cap has about a 1/16″ gap where it should seat on back of grip as can be seen in photos. Top of pommel shows some old filing as can be seen in photos. 4-40705 JS12 (6,000-8,000)
