CONFEDERATE WOODEN SCABBARDED CAVALRY SABER. You are bidding on a nice example of an “as found” wood scabbard Confederate cavalry saber. There is conjecture over who made these swords, but we know at least some of the scabbards were made by H. Marshall of Atlanta, GA. There is one variant of this sword made by B. Douglas of Columbia, SC. This sword is more than likely the product of Marshall of Atlanta or Kraft, Goldschmidt & Kraft of Columbia, SC. Regardless of who made these swords, they are unique to the Confederacy showing ingenuity when metal was not available for scabbards. Marshall used burnt roofing for their scabbard mounts according to one article and these mounts could be as such. There are known identified swords to both GA and SC cavalry and probably other state units also. The cast brass scabbard throats are often missing as is this one. These brass throats were, at one time, commonly excavated in battle sites and camp sites of Joe Wheeler’s cavalry in late 1863 sites. This particular example exhibits a blade which is just over 35″ but the point is now missing. It appears to have broken from a forging flaw. This blade is in fine condition, being uncleaned and still exhibits a fragment of its orig protective washer. The leather grip is mostly intact with its orig single thin iron wire wrap. The brass hilt, pommel, brass drag and scabbard rings have rich, deep patina. The scabbard body retains most of its orig pins and also is untouched. This is a nice as found example of a scarce and popular Confederate saber. CONDITION: Blade is gray/white under areas of scattered grunge, pitting and rust. Last inch of blade tip is missing. Leather grip is scuffed overall, worn at the high spots, showing the wooden carved under core as can be seen in the photos. Surfaces all appear untouched with good mustard to black patina to brass hilt and scabbard mounts. Sheet metal bodies of scabbard mounts still retain some black finish under rust. Drag is missing all four of its retaining pins and therefore is loose and will slide off. Scabbard body is sound with numerous scrapes, scratches and scuffs. 4-40701 JS15 (6,000-8,000)
