NASHVILLE PLOW WORKS CAVALRY OFFICER’S SABER. This is a fine example of a well marked and classic Confederate Officer’s saber. Cast into the bottom of the guard is a large “CSA” and “Nashville Plow Works”, as can be seen in photos. Markings are very clear. Quite often the markings on this sword are poorly cast and not discernible. There are two variant hilts in this pattern, one being stippled and the other being un-stippled with a reversed “N”in Nashville. This sword is the latter variant. This sword has all the classic Nashville features, including a 35″ long, 1-1/4″ wide and a chunky 3/8” thick blade at ricasso. Blade is in beautiful condition showing its typical long, shallow, unstopped fuller. Grip is leather with finely twisted copper wire. The orig scabbard accompanying this sword is the classic brass mounted, lap seamed variant with “canoe shaped” brass throat. SIZE: 35″ blade. CONDITION: Blade is gray with scattered areas of staining and light pitting. Leather grip is mostly intact, though very dry and flaking in areas. About 1/3 of wire wrap is missing, protective washer is missing. Brass surfaces to hilt, pommel, drag, backstrap, ring mounts and the throat are mostly smooth with yellow patina with numerous small scratches, nicks and dings. Iron scabbard body is solid with no dents. Surface is mostly brown with some pitting near tip. Carrying rings are quarter sized, bottom one being brass, top one iron. The iron one is probably replaced, where the brass ones patina matches brass on other sword parts and was probably contemporary to its time of use. 4-40706 JS18 (8,000-12,000)
