WILLIAM & MARY CARVED WALNUT BLANKET CHEST. Late 17th-early 18th century. The rectangular molded lid mounted on original iron strap hinges, fitted to the conforming case with applied upper molding, opening to a well. The front panel with carved pinwheel floral circular panels centering a four-petal flowerhead with an incised circle, the pilasters fernleaf carved, raised on later suppressed ball feet. SIZE: 26-1/4″ h. x 50″ w. x 20″ d. PROVENANCE: Fontaine’s Auction Gallery, November 1, 2003: This item was the cover lot. CONDITION: Paneled sides and back original. Lid original and mounted on original hinges; lid with old shrinkage crack. Front panel with original iron escutcheon, lock absent. Bottom board original. Old inactive insect damage. Pilasters with restoration, including splices and additions, professionally done. Upper molding with restoration and with later additions.
