ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: We have just received some paperwork from the estate of the consignor of this lot. The copies of this paperwork are in regards to O.P. Height who was a Pvt in Capt. Sparkmans Co. of the TN Light Artillery. He was captured at Fort Donelson Feb, 1862. He was exchanged near Vicksburg, MS Sept. 1862 Also captured at Fort Hudson LA. July 1863. THOMAS, GRISWOLD CONFEDERATE ARTILLERY OFFICER’S SABER. This is a fine example of the brass scabbarded artillery officer’s saber, made in New Orleans. This example has perfect markings as seen in photos, a near perfect grip and as fine a scabbard as you will find, complete with good patina and no dents, as can be seen in photos. There is a collectors tag on this sword stating that this sword was “carried by Oliver P. Hight, Capt. Sparkman’s Light Artillery. Captured at Fort Donaldson”. Scratched into the right side of crossguard is “10th” and quillon on same side has a nicely scratched in, haloed star. SIZE: 31-1/2″ blade. CONDITION: The 31-1/2″ gray blade has several small nicks in cutting edge with scattered staining. Maker’s marks are crisp. Orig protective washer is intact, complete and tight. Brown leather grip is worn through at high areas, otherwise complete and intact. Orig twisted copper wire is complete and tight. Brass surfaces of hilt, pommel, brass scabbard exhibit yellow patina with scattered staining, scratches and nicks. 4-40702 JS17 (8,000-12,000)
