RARE AND IMPORTANT AMERICAN NEGRO LEAGUE PORTRAIT OF “CANDY JIM” TAYLOR. Circa 1927. Watercolor on heavy paper board. Mounted in original painted frame. The folk art portrait of renowned Negro League third baseman and manager labeled, “C. James”. Signed by the artist “A. Wilson”, lower right. The player depicted in period baseball uniform at batting stance. All within a foliate leaf and pine cone cartouche. The back with paper musical ephemera dated “1927”. This is a fine example of folk art Black Americana. We believe this to be the only Negro League portrait to have surfaced in the marketplace in recent time.
