CIVIL WAR MEDICAL STAFF SWORD OF WASHINGTON A. CONNOLLY. This sword is engraved between the top mounts on the reverse of scabbard “Washington A. Connolly NY”. This sword is the standard pattern, 1840 medical staff, but the MS device, normally attached above the stars on the obverse counter-guard is blank. It is not uncommon for applied silver letters to fall off, but this sword shows no solder remnants and may never have had them. The 28″ dbl edged blade is etched with various military motifs, including two eagles with ribbons reading “E Pluribus Unum”. Washington Connolly volunteered in the 2nd New York State Militia at the age of 46 on the staff of Col. G.W.B. Tompkins. On July 21, 1861 surgeon Connolly would be captured in action while engaged with Confederate troops at the historic battle of first Bull Run, As a prisoner of War, Connolly would be confined in Libby Prison where he would contact typhoid fever. As a result of the effects from the disease, Surgeon Connolly would die on August 2, 1875. The 2nd NY State Vol. and the 82nd NY Inf. would engage CSA troops at the following: Bull Run; Winchester; Yorktown; Malvern hill; Antietam; Fredericksburg; Gettysburg; Cold Harbor; The Wilderness; Spottsylvania; North Anna; Petersburg and the Appomattox Campaign. From the fine collection of a Southern gentleman. SIZE: 28″ blade. CONDITION: Overall sword is very good. Blade is gray with most etching discernible with areas of scattered pitting. Hilt and scabbard retain only tiny amounts of orig gilt in protected areas with scattered, numerous small scrapes and scratches. Middle mount and drag retain their orig pins, though have been moved, each a fraction of an inch, with the pins now wedged between mount and scabbard body. 4-40031 JS3 (1,500-2,500)
