REGULATION MEDICAL STAFF SWORD OF ASSISTANT SURGEON W.H. GODDARD, 25TH CONNECTICUT WITH CDV OF HIM HOLDING THIS SWORD. This regulation, model 1840, Medical Staff sword appears in “as found” condition with possible battle damage to scabbard body at the middle mount, as can be seen in photos. This sword has a great patina and much gold gilt is present on hilt and scabbard mounts. The 31″ blade has various patriotic motifs including 6″ panel which reads “United States Medical Staff”. The brass scabbard is engraved between the two mounts “W.H. Goddard, M. D/ 25th REG./CV”. Assistant Surgeon Goddard accompanied his regiment, the 25th CT, to Louisiana early in 1863 and was involved in the Port Hudson Campaign where he became ill with “typhoid-malarial fever”. Just after the surrender of Port Hudson on July 9th, Goddard was furloughed home July 14, 1863, where he died within a month. Port Hudson killed many soldiers and officers, mainly due to disease, including this surgeon. This unit alone lost 29 men in battle, but 65 men and officers to disease. From the fine collection of a Southern gentleman. SIZE: 37-1/2″ overall, 31″ blade. CONDITION: Blade is gray/bright with all etching easily discernible. There is a small ripple in the blade about 2″ from the tip, possibly caused by battle, as there is a bend and puncture in scabbard body above the middle mount. Hilt and scabbard retain about 25% of their gilt wash with the remainder being well patinaed with numerous small dings and scratches. 4-40029 JS2 (4,000-6,000)
