CIVIL WAR SWORD, SCABBARD, BELT & BUCKLE WITH PAPERS. Foot Officer’s sword having the blade marked “Horstmann & Sons Philadelphia”. A brass pommel with nice old patina and wrapped handle. Scabbard being original with black leather and brass mounts. Belt being of brown leather and having brass buttons and clips, a period brass buckle with displayed eagle and leaf branches. Accompanying the lot is a notebook with family papers associated with the sword. The sword comes from the George H. Smith family and the papers relate to his service. They include a notice of enrollment (July 1864), a roll of the 42nd Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers (his name included), a discharge certificate, a death memorial card dated 1901, a letter dated Feb. 1, 1863 appointing Mr. Smith General Overseer at camp (contraband camp), a letter dated Dec. 20, 1862 from Camp near Falmouth, VA from his son Charles A. Smith and several photos of George H. Smith with some biographical information regarding the family with a detailed history of George H. Smith. SIZE: Sword is overall 35″ l. Blade is 29-3/4″ l. Scabbard is 28-3/4″ l. Belt is 35-1/2″ l. PROVENANCE: Descended through the family of George H. Smith. CONDITION: Sword is fair to good, the belt with dryness; good, the scabbard with leather cracking and stiffness; fair. 9-93083 (2,000-4,000)
