CIVIL WAR MEDICAL STAFF OFFICER’S SWORD AND MEDICAL SASH OF DR. DANIEL M. HOLT, 121ST NY. Surgeon Holt entered the War in August of 1862, at the age of 42, the oldest member of the 121st NY staff. Surgeon Holt would stay in service until late in 1864. Holt saw most every major battle of the Army of the Potomac, including Antietam, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He was captured in May of 1863 wearing this sword. He was only imprisoned for 10 days at Libby Prison. According to A Surgeon’s Civil War, The Letters and Diary of Daniel M. Holt M.D. by Griner, Coryell and Smither, published by Kent State University in 1994; only by direct intervention of Gen. Robert E. Lee himself, was Holt released and his personal belongings, including this sword, were returned to him. Dr. Holt returned home to the Mohawk Valley in October of 1864. He was now, simply, “Dr. Holt, Physician…setting his sword and green sash aside, he wanted only to take up again the role he had played in the community 26 months earlier-a country doctor. Unfortunately, Holt’s health prevented him from resuming medical practice.” Holt died within 4 years, living on a government pension from bronchial and lung problems that he blamed “on those dreadful days and nights at Rappahannock Station.” Holt’s sword was on display at the Masonic Lodge in Newport, NY for many years, according to his book. 36″ overall with a 31″ double edged blade with 17″ etched panels with various military motifs and a 5″ panel reading “US Medical Staff”.
