UNSIGNED (AMERICAN, MID-19TH CENTURY) A TRANSITIONAL STEAM SCHOONER. Oil on canvas nautical scene shows a black hulled three-masted schooner with smokestack billowing smoke. A number of men are seen on deck and sails have been stowed. The ship rides green swells and two other sailing vessels can be seen. All under a light blue to salmon colored sky. Housed in a gold wood frame. The back canvas having a J. J. Adams, Boston canvas stamp. Also an old penned label indicating “BARK ARIEL BUILT AT BUNGTOWN WARREN R. I. ABOUT 1850. OWNED BY CAPTAIN JOSEPH L. GARDNER OF BRISTOL.” SIZE: 22″ x 27″. CONDITION: All over craquelure, a couple of spot touch ups, otherwise very good. 9-20327 (2,000-4,000)
