CIVIL WAR AMES US STAFF & FIELD OFFICER’S SWORD. This is a nice example of the popular Model 1850 US Staff & Field Officer’s sword. This the the pattern prescribed by regulation to be worn by Infantry officers, Major and higher, though many Captains and even Lieutenants were given them also. This sword was made by the preeminent American sword maker of the era; Ames Manufacturing Company, Chicopee, Mass. This example is in beautiful condition exhibiting a 31-1/2″ blade finely patriotically etched and maker marked. The etching retains much of its original lustre as can be seen in photos. The orig regulation brass mounted retained much of its orig gold-plating to mounts as does the hilt and pommel. The grip is near perfect with all the orig sharkskin wrap and gilt twisted brass wire intact and tight. Even the orig buff protective washer is retained. SIZE: 31-1/2″ blade. CONDITION: Blade is bright/white with scattered small areas of staining and pitting, etch retains much of its lustre. Brass scabbard mounts, hilt and pommel have yellow patina with 20-30% orig gilt especially strong in protected areas. Steel scabbard body retains traces of finish with overall staining and pitting. Sharkskin grip is solid and complete with wear at high spots, the wire wrap is complete and tight. 4-40880 JS100 (1,800-2,500)
