THREE MEXICAN WAR RELATED PIECES. The lot includes: Two porcelain plates & a framed letter. 1) 6-3/4″ black transfer plate titled “Poinsett’s Defense”. The transfer having a town square with large crowd celebrating. The border with American eagle, shields, and flowers. The back marked “Davenport”. 2) 8-3/4″ rare plate in blue & white with a half portrait of Maximilian Emperor of Mexico and titled “Maximiliano Primero-Emperador de Mexico”. The border having six heart-shaped vignettes with birds. The back signed “D. Johnston Bordeaux Poterie”. 3) Framed 1851 letter signed by a Mexican War soldier. Signed by William Mann relating to an appropriation of money for defraying the expenses of the returning of the First & Second Pennsylvania Volunteers in Mexico. SIZE: Sight: Letter is 9-1/2″ x 7-1/2″. PROVENANCE: From a coastal New Jersey home. CONDITION: 1) Shallow chip to reverse which cannot be seen from the front. 2) Small light hairline, otherwise very good. 3) Very good. 9-24272 (300-500)
