TWO TRANSFERWARE “TEXIAN CAMPAIGNE” DINNERWARES. Second quarter 19th Century. The first an oval platter in pink transferware. The base with underglaze blue mark at the base of the cartouche with the initials “J. B.” for James Beech. The center of the platter with the scene of battle, the scrolling border with war trophies at the corners over floral sprays. The second, a purple transferware plate with a central vignette of cannonade within a floral scrolling border of military trophies. Also marked “TEXIAN CAMPAIGNE” within a cartouche in under glaze purple with the initials “J.B.” for James Beech. According to recent research, the “Texian Campaigne” series was introduced by James Beech about 1837-40 to mark the Texas Revolution (1835-36) or first Texian Campaigne, when Texas achieved its independence. The design was continued unchanged by his successors, Thomas Walker and Anthony Shaw. See the Spring 2008 Texian Campaigne Collectors Bulletin, p. 10. SIZE: Platter: 10-3/4″ w x 13-1/4″ l. Plate: 8-1/2″ dia. PROVENANCE: From a coastal New Jersey home. CONDITION: The platter overall very good with surface scratches and cuts in the working surface and with light craquelure on the reverse. Overall good.
