AMES 1850 FOOT OFFICER’S SWORD INSCRIBED TO LIEUT C.F.JORDAN OF THE 15TH MAINE VOLS. This regulation model 1850 foot officer’s sword appears in fine “as found” condition with “AMES MFG CO ” stamped on top scabbard mount. 30.5″ blade exhibits 15″ etched panels with various military motifs, eagle, and U.S. The sword is also marked in etch “AMES MFG CO/Chicopee,Mass ” and stamped 1862 and “JH” on the ricasso. The sword retains its orig shark’s skin grip and twisted brass wire. Guard has proper cast floral design and is engraved “LIEUT C.F.JORDAN/CO D 15TH ME REGT/CIVIL WAR” and “1861/1865″ on pommel. Charles F. Jordan mustered in as a Private with Co D,1st Reg’t Maine Inf on 5/3/61; re-enlisted 12/10/61 with Co D, 15th Maine Vol Inf and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant before mustering out 12/4/65. Accompanying this lot are muster and pension records for Jordan. The 15th Maine served with the Army and Dept of the Gulf in the defense of New Orleans and Pensacola. SIZE: 30.5” blade. CONDITION: Sword overall is in very good condition. Blade is gray/bright with some orig frost. Two etchings still present. There are no visable nicks in cutting edge. Brass hilt retains much orig gilt in protected areas, as do the scabbard mounts. Scabbard body is sound with several small cracks and areas of mottling and scuffing. Shark’s skin grip is intact as is twisted wire and very good overall. Brass guard and pommel retain a pleasing mellow patina. 4-40856 JWD100 (1,500-2,500)
