SCRIMSHAW TUSK AND TOOTH. 20th century, New England. 1) The walrus tusk scrimmed with a woman in long dress above a rope border centering three hearts, a sperm whale within a cartouche above a whaling ship in full sail above a scene of buildings in town. The reverse carved with an eagle on pedestal scrimmed with “PEACE” above the name “I. SMITH” all over an allegorical biblical scene of a man in rags clutching a crucifix engraved “IHS” on a hillside above a banner scrimmed “ROCK OF AGES” beneath the scene of a sinking ship. 2) A small tooth scrimmed with a flower within a vase, the opposing side scrimmed with an allegorical scene of the crucifixion, polychrome decorated. SIZE: 1) 15″ h. 2) 5″ l. PROVENANCE: From a private Utah collection. CONDITION: 1) Tusk with normal and vertical hairline shrinkage cracks, but with good surface and patina. 2) With shrinkage cracks and with losses to base of tooth.
