CHARLES DANA GIBSON (AMERICAN, 1867 – 1944) “GEORGIUS & PATER A NEW POISON”. Outstanding pen & ink illustration shows Locusta in the presence of Nero trying the poison prepared for Britannicus. After a painting by Sylvestre. Gibson has used this scene as a commentary with the Poison labeled George’s Theories and the stricken man labeled “Labor”. Nero’s belt is labeled “McGlynn”. Marked in pencil at bottom right “Life for Aug. 30″, presumably used in Life Magazine. Unframed, signed lower left. SIZE: 19-3/4″ x 26”. PROVENANCE: Descent through the artist’s family. CONDITION: The borders with dirt & some small tears & losses; the image is very good. 9-23002 (2,000-3,000)
