PENNSYLVANIA CHIPPENDALE WALNUT SLANT-LID DESK. Fourth quarter of the 18th century. The rectangular dovetailed case fitted with hinged sloping lid, supported by lopers, opening to an interior fitted with eight valanced cubbyholes above four banks of two blocked serpentine drawers, centering a shell-carved prospect door opening to expose a bank of four small drawers, further flanked by vertical fluted document drawers. The case fitted with four graduated thumbmolded long drawers on a molded base, raised on ogee bracket feet with scalloped returns. Several of the small interior drawers with pencil inscriptions left by previous owners or guests. One example: “James G. Graten and Kate S. Graten May 24, 1874”. A second inscription reads “S. Rippack Township, Montgomery County, State of Pennsylvania”. Another: “James Groten July 24, 1875 A.D. / Perkins / Morgantown”. Another: “H.D. Grimley / painter / March 13-1901 / Zieglerville, Pa. / Mont. Co.”. SIZE: 42″ h. x 39-3/4″ case w. x 21″ d. PROVENANCE: From a fine Coastal Maine estate. CONDITION: Very nice original structural condition, small patch center front top behind lid lock plate. With fine old cleaned surfaces, soft reddish-brown patina.
