HIGH GRADE CIVIL WAR ERA STAFF OFFICER’S SWORD. This sword exhibits a half statue, engraved metal grip and a hilt containing a full knights armor and a dragon. A figure of the Northwind holds the knuckle bow in its mouth. The Northwind and statue are topped with a turreted castle, a spread-wing eagle sitting atop the castle. The brass scabbard has raised relief mounts with soldered decorations including two patriotic eagles holding shield and arrows. Scabbard retains much of its orig gilt. The hilt and grip are gilded. The blade retains a portion of its orig gilt. This 33″ Clauberg made blade exhibits patriotic and floral etched panels and the motto “Union Forever”. Scabbard is engraved between the top mounts Presented to “Captain J P Jordan by the Roxbury City Guard/ June 17th, 1868”. Jediah P. Jordan was a Sgt. and later Sgt. Maj. in Company D, 42nd, MA Vol. in 1864. He was from Roxbury, MA and he must have stayed in the militia, based on the post-war presentation. This sword is pictured on page 224 of C.Donald Furr’s book American Swords & Maker Marks. From the fine collection of a Southern gentleman. SIZE: 33″ blade. CONDITION: Sword scabbard overall, is very good, exhibiting about 1/3 of its orig plating. Scabbard body and high relief portions of mounts show wear from cleaning. Screws retaining scabbard mounts are probable replacements. etched panels on the gray blade are all discernible with good gilt highlights left on side the blade with motto and opposite side shows only traces of gold background. Hilt and grip appear to be replated with almost all new plate retained on grip and basket. Backstrap containing statue and pommel possibly show remnants of orig gilt in protected areas. Eagle device on pommel appears to be a replacement. 4-40028 JS6 (3,000-5,000)
