1862 “BALTIMORE DESPATCH STAMPS” PAINTING. Watercolor stamp illustration shows an eagle perched atop a Confederate flag devouring a snake with two other snakes in talons. A waving American flag is behind in a landscape scene with mountains and water. A banner is seen above with “Baltimore Despatch Stamps” and on the right side is the seal of the City of Baltimore. Signed lower right “JWK 1862″. Housed in a silver gilt frame with gray matte. NOTE: Joseph Graffins Baltimore Despatch was a local mail carrier in Baltimore, MD. Rare stamps can be found in Scott’s stamp catalog with the date 1856. SIZE: Actual: 3-1/2″ x 5-3/4”. PROVENANCE: From a coastal New Jersey home. CONDITION: Very good. 9-24255 (500-800)
