HAROLD MATTHEWS BRETT (American, 1880-1955) THE CHECKER GAME. Oil on canvas illustrative scene shows two men playing a game of checkers while three others look on. They are at the General Store and one of the participants is the owner. An open doorway can be seen behind the game with a man & woman conversing. The store is filled with produce and it appears it is also the Post Office. Signed lower right “H M Brett”. Brett studied under Howard Pyle and soon thereafter his illustrative work debuted in Harper’s Weekly and began to appear in most of the national magazines. Housed in an antique carved gilt frame. SIZE: 24″ X 36″. CONDITION: Some minor touch up, very good. 9-22723 (8,000-12,000)
