CORRECTION: There is a typographical error in the description of the Servant tag #685. The correct date, of course, is 1848 not 1828 and the Numismatic Conservation Services, of course, affirms this (please see our image on the website of the Numismatic Conservation Services (NCS) certificate.

GROUP OF FIVE AUTHENTICATED CHARLESTON SLAVE TAGS. This group of excavated tags are all in good condition, well marked and all have either an NGC or NCS certificate of genuineness. NGC or Numismatic Guaranty Corp of America is the American Numismatic Association’s official grading service. Included in this group are 3 servant tags from the years 1825, 1857, and 1859. Also included is a very rare Charleston Neck (C.N.) servant’s tag, dated 1828, and a rare 1855 dated Fruiterer’s tag. The four Charleston tags are all well struck and easy to read. A maker’s mark of “LaFar” is easily seen at the bottom of the large, 2″ square, 1825 dated Servant’s tag in a raised mark, depressed channel cartouche. Charleston neck tag is the least discernible tag in this group, as seen in photographs, though all the letters can be made out on this 2″ square, octagonal shaped tag. CONDITION: All tags were excavated and show pitted surfaces from the corrosive nature of being in the ground for over 100 years. The 1857 and 1859 dated servant tags were given an electrolysis treatment(electric current in a stabilizing bath to remove corrosive residue)and not cleaned with abrasives. Charleston neck tag appears to have several bends repaired, such that some of the letters at repaired creases are less discernible. The 1825 Servant and 1855 Fruiterer tags are fairly well struck with dark brown/green surfaces. 4-39555 JS (10,000-20,000)
