H. M. BRIGATINE “BUZZARD” LITHOGRAPH. This is an aquatint by Edward Duncan, after the painting by W. I. Huggins, Marine Painter to His Majesty. It depicts the “H. M. Brigatine ‘BUZZARD’ engaging the Spanish slave Brig ‘EL FORMIDABLE’ off the coast of Calabar River (in the Bight of Benin, off the west coast of Africa), Dec. 17, 1834, where she was captured after a chase of 9 hours with her Sweeps and close action of 45 minutes when they ran her on board.” This print is one of several produced by British marine artists in the years following the “1807 Act of Abolition” of the British slave trade depicting Navy ships in confrontations with vessels from countries still engaged in the Atlantic slave trade.
