RARE INDIAN USED CUSTER RANGE SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1873 SADDLE RING CARBINE. SN 39733. Cal. 45-70. Standard 1873 carbine with 22″ bbl, replacement German silver Rocky Mtn. front sight blade with the rear sight, mounted backwards closer to the receiver. Rear sight is graduated to 500 yards on the side and 1,200 yards on the staff. Breech block is marked “MODEL / 1873 / EAGLEHEAD / CROSSED SABERS / US”. Lockplate has high arch and is marked “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1873” with a spread winged American eagle all forward of the hammer. Mounted in a 1-pc walnut stock with single band that has the hole for a stacking swivel and trigger guard is 2-pc without sling swivel. Left side of stock, below the receiver has the two inlaid pads for the sling bar which has been removed and has been gone apparently most of the life of the carbine as the cut metal shows great age and wear with pitting. Left side of wrist has the outline of an oval cartouche. Buttplate is carbine/musket style without trap. Buttplate was not removed as it was observed that the bottom screw slot had previously been slipped and a preliminary attempt to remove the screw revealed that it was frozen in place so no examination was made under the buttplate. Right side of buttstock at the buttplate is carved with a 5-pointed star that has a circle in the center identical to two other carbines being sold in this auction. The star shows very heavy wear and is faint on the two rear legs. The spiritual significance of the star marking is discussed in the paragraph preceding the listing for this and two other similarly marked carbines being sold in this auction. PROVENANCE: Dick Harmon Collection; Robert W. Smith Collection. CONDITION: Good to very good. No orig finish remains with bbl retaining a dark brown patina with heavy pitting over forward part of the bbl, especially at left side at the muzzle consistent with long-term storage while wrapped in leather or a cloth in a damp place. Breech block & lockplate are a light cleaned metal patina. Hammer retains a dark patina with moderate to heavy surface rust. Trigger guard is a cleaned metal patina with scattered pitting. Buttplate is a very dark brown patina with moderate to heavy rust. Mechanics are crisp, strong bore with heavy pitting. 4-40787 JR340 (10,000-20,000)
