THREE AMERICAN NEEDLEWORK SAMPLERS PROBABLY NEW YORK OR PENNSYLVANIA. First half 19th century. The FIRST, a pictorial example wrought by “Harriott (last name illegible)”, depicting the Angel Gabriel with horn, a flock of sheep with shepherd and shepherdess, birds in tree, a bird in cage, and an African-American child in stocking cap and red pants, a family group with dog, etc., within a stylized scrolling floral vinery border. The linen backing in fair-to-good condition, with an overall tan cast. The silk and cotton threads remain intact with faded color. The condition of the stitching in the name of the maker is in the worst condition of all. Overall good. The SECOND, a sampler wrought by “Sarah Jarvis” with two alphabet rows above a chain line, followed by “Sarah Jarvis is my name and with my needle/mark the same and by this work you/may plainly see what care my/parents took of me/ Each moment brings us nearer too our/end Why would we then our precious time misspend” followed by a row of dogs and horses above a row of stitched diamonds, the lower half three rows of stylized plants, flowers, urns and vases, birds, ducks, and other animals, above the final line “Sarah Jarvis finished this April 27 Aged 10 years/1818”. The whole within a scrolling floral border. Stitched throughout with polychrome cotton and silk thread, the linen backing with areas of weakness and spots of insect damage throughout. Otherwise good condition. The THIRD, a pictorial example with poetry, wrought by “Jane Evans/ Aged 13 years/ 1843”, all within a scrolling fruit and floral border, the center of the work with the following verse: “Weep not for the dead/Who tranquilly repose/Their spark of life is fled/But with it all their woes/The broken heart is healed/The reign of sorrow oer/Their future bliss is sealed/And they can breathe no more/Mourn rather for the doom/Of those who struggle on/In dreariness and gloom/Until their course is done/Who linger here and grieve/As death dissolves each tie/That make them wish to live/Yet cannot dare to die”. The verse flanked with floral-filled urns, floral sprays and sprigs, birds in branches, a sailing vessel, baskets of fruit, and a pair of long-tailed animals, all within a scrolling vinery border. SIZE: FIRST: 13″ x 8″ sight. SECOND: 13″ x 12-1/4″ sight. THIRD:17″ x 12-1/2″ sight. CONDITION: As noted in description above with several small areas of insect loss.
