WALLPAPER-COVERED TOP HAT BANDBOX MADE BY D.HARRIS, WITH ORIGINAL TOP HAT. First half 19th century. New York. Covered in an abstract design wallpaper in blues, greens, and yellow, the bandbox lid with a hand stenciled advertisement depicting a beaver by a single tree within a river landscape framed by THE LOGO “E. HILLS, Hat & Cap Manufacturer,/ 60 State Street, Albany.” all framed within an oval wreath of oak leaves. Additionally in script is the name of the hat owner “Henry Saltonia” (SP?) Reverse of the lid with the label ” D. HARRIS, Paper Hanger & Bandbox/ Manufacturer, No. 7 Washington Street Albany. The original beaver skin top hat is fitted within the box. The interior of the hat lid retains the original label “W A. HASLET/ FORT PLANE./ NY” beneath a gilt crest above which is attached the initials of the owner “H S”. SIZE: h. overall 9″ x overall l. 12-1/3 x w. 11-1/8 CONDITION: The wallpaper covering retains good color but with wear. The stenciled advertisement has darkened considerably and with overall spotting. The top hat remains in very good condition overall. 9-20349 (2,200-3,000)
