Gatewood was a graduate of West Point in 1877 and was posted to the Cavalry in the West. He eventually served under Brig. Gen. Nelson Appleton Miles. Gatewood was born in Woodstock, Virginia in 1853 and shortly after his graduation from West Point was assigned to the 6th Cavalry. From then until the fall of 1885, he was almost constantly on field duty in the Arizona/New Mexico region. He was involved in the Victorio campaign in 1879-1880 and received a special commendation from Col. A.P. Morrow. He was a member of Crook’s expedition into Sonora in 1883, which resulted in Chatto’s surrender, for which he was mentioned in War Dept orders. During his service, he was a Company Commander of a Battalion of 5 Companies of Apache Scouts. Gatewood not only learned the Indian’s language, but also their ways. Having served many years in Geronimo’s region, he was familiar with the family and friends of Geronimo as well as his enemies. Gatewood was assigned the task of making contact with Geronimo. Because of his familiarity with the Indians, Gatewood was given the task of bringing Geronimo in and proceeded into Mexico to convince Geronimo to surrender to Gen. Miles. Gatewood was successful in getting Geronimo to surrender; he subsequently received a great deal of credit and fell into disfavor with Miles. Subsequently, as a military officer he was somewhat overlooked for much deserved promotions and on May 20th of 1896 died of stomach cancer. This collection, obtained over a period of time by the consignor, includes a number of images of Gatewood and his relatives both in military clothes as well as civilian clothes. The archive also includes: (1.) West Point class book of 1877, in which Gatewood is mentioned in detail starting on page 48.
