UNSIGNED (American, First half of the 19th Century) FOLK ART DOUBLE PORTRAIT. Oil on wood panel (probably poplar) shows an older couple seated at a round stand having an open ledger book which is dated “November 9, 1820″. The man wears a brown suit with brass buttons and a white bow tie. On his right, his wife is in a black dress with lace shawl and bonnet. She is knitting with both hands above the table. Through the window in the background can be seen a landscape with water, trees and sky. Housed in a flat stained mahogany frame. SIZE: 16-3/4″ x 20-3/4”. PROVENANCE: According to our consignor, this was found in a New Jersey Estate who were direct descendants of John Hart, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
