EXTREMELY RARE WINCHESTER “CHRISTMAS” BOX FOR 100 STAR PAPER 12 GA SHOT SHELLS.

EXTREMELY RARE WINCHESTER “CHRISTMAS” BOX FOR 100 STAR PAPER 12 GA SHOT SHELLS. Beautiful & rare 2-pc cardboard box 8-1/4″ x 8-1/4″ x 2-1/4″ with multicolor lithographed top that depicts a bird dog holding a dead grouse and “WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.” lettering in blue and “NEW HAVEN / CONN. USA” in an oval with foliate arabesque frame in the top right corner. Bottom 1/3 of the top is marked “100 WATER PROOFED / STAR PAPER SHOT SHELLS” in red, yellow & blue lettering with the “WATER PROOFED” in a ribbon. Left side of the box depicts a market hunter in a sneak boat in cattails near a shore line shooting into a flock of ducks. The right side depicts two resting bird dogs alongside several brace of game birds,a game bag, and a period shotgun. The front and back sides are marked “100 WINCHESTER STAR WATER PROOFED” with the central depiction of a black paper body shot shell with brass head marked “W.R.A. CO. / NO 12 / STAR” on the head and “NO. 12” in white on shot shell body. Top right has a yellow star marked “NO. 12”. Bottom line is “NO: 12” with “WINCHESTER NO. 2 COPPER PRIMERS” all in multicolor printing. This box is very rare with two of the sides being professionally restored replacements that are virtually undetectable. One of the detached original panels is included. Lower right corner of top is marked “Benton Lithographing Co. / New Haven Conn”, which lettering has been restored. Period bottom is date marked “1 19 84” in purple ink with all of its orig parts intact, though not the correct bottom for a “Christmas Box”, likely “Leader”. A correct, new, replacement bottom section is also included. Accompanied by 32 orig new primed empties with black paper bodies and thin brass heads marked as described above. This is an extraordinarily rare colorful & decorative box that would add substantially to anyone’s shotgun collection display. CONDITION: Fine to very fine as restored, repairs as noted above.Front side of box has a tear along the left edge running from the bottom to the corner but does not affect the image. Overall retains strong orig colors with matching, virtually undetectable restored colors on the two sides. Blues are strong but lightly faded; reds are moderately faded with yellows strong & bright. Overall the box exhibits moderate soil & yellowing with a small crease down left edge of top and along left side. Bottom is moderately soiled with some foxing and retains remnants of the its original paper label.Second bottom is a new replacement. Altogether a wonderful, rare and colorful box.
