FINE REMINGTON MODEL 1875 SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER. SN 26. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40). Nickel finish with 7-1/2″ rnd bbl, German silver front sight and 1-line address. Left upper side of frame is stamped “44”. Mounted with 2-pc, nicely figured, varnished walnut grips pencil numbered on inside to this revolver. This is Remington’s attempt to compete with the Colt single action Army with an estimated 25,000-30,000 of these revolvers produced in the period 1875-1889 in both blue & nickel and also in caliber 44 Remington and 45 Colt. Even though the Remington cyl was simpler & easier to remove than the competing Colt single action army, Remington was simply behind the power curve in name recognition and distribution with Colt already firmly established both on the civilian & military markets by the time this revolver was produced. However, the U.S. Interior Dept. did purchase 639 of these revolvers with nickel finish for their Indian police to be used on Western reservations, the Mexican government purchased an additional 1,000 revolvers and there was reportedly a contract with Egypt for 10,000 of these revolvers but it is believed only a small fraction of that contract was ever filled. Altogether a fairly scarce revolver, especially when compared to the Colt single action Army revolver of the same time frame. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Overall retains most of its orig nickel finish having been cleaned with steel wool or some other light abrasive. There is light pitting on right side of frame, bbl at the frame and web of ejector rod housing. Grips have a chipped left toe, otherwise are sound showing moderate to heavy wear with light handling & use marks and retain about 50% orig varnish. Hammer is not solid in safety notch, otherwide mechanics are fine, strong sharp bore with scattered pitting. 4-40793 JR195 (4,000-6,000)
