US RIFLED 42-POUNDER TYPE I JAMES BOLT. Battlefield souvenir – non-excavated. Picked up near Fort Pulaski, Georgia. This is the invention of Charles Tilllinghast James of Rhode Island who was also a Major General in the Rhode Island State Militia. This cal. was used during the bombardment of Fort Pulaski in Savannah, Georgia where General Gilmore’s artillery breached the brick fort – this was the first instance of rifled artillery rendering masonry forts obsolete.
