SCARCE ENGRAVED PRESENTATION NICKEL & GOLD WESSON & HARRINGTON NO. 3 SPUR TRIGGER REVOLVER. SN 4398. Cal. 32 RF Short. Nickel & gold finish with 2-11/16″ oct bbl, fixed sights with Wesson & Harrington 1-line address on left top flat. Frame is nickel finish with gold plated 5-shot cyl and mounted with bird head smooth pearl grips numbered on their inside faces to this revolver. Revolver is engraved by Gustave Young in his wonderful foliate arabesque patterns with punch dot background. Pattern on left side of frame incorporates Mr. Young’s distinctive dog’s head in one scroll and a mythical creature bird head in a scroll on right side. Engraving is over the top strap and on to the bbl with a wave & dot pattern on edges of top strap. Back strap is engraved to match with wave & dot border patterns and the inscription in script “Chas K. Pevey”. While this little revolver was produced in a quantity estimated at about 15,000 they are almost never encountered engraved and presentation or inscribed models are virtually unknown. Accompanied by a letter on Smith & Wesson letterhead over the signature of R.G. Jinks, Services Operation Manager & Historian, dated April 30, 1982 identifying this revolver as a third type produced from 1874-1879 along with an appraisal and an offer to purchase. CONDITION: Extremely fine, all matching including bbl, cyl & grips. Overall retains virtually all of its strong orig nickel finish on frame & bbl and about 90% crisp orig gold plating on cyl with only losses around the face of cyl and some very minor flaking on front edge around one flute. Grips are crisp showing no wear and no discernible flaws, with great fire & color. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore with a few scattered spots of pitting. 4-40575 JR155 (3,000-5,000)
