FOLK ART FROST PATTERN HOOKED RUG. Third quarter 19th century, Biddeford, Maine. Depicting a mother cat and kittens. E.S. Frost pattern number 39. Wool on burlap. Mischievous kittens, one playing with mother’s tail, the other a ball on a checkerboard floor, within a foliate border. Edward Sands Frost of Biddeford, Maine, produced and sold hooked rug designs from the late 1860’s until 1876 when he sold the business. His patterns continued to be sold until the early 20th century. This pattern is included in the Greenfield Village Henry Ford Museum 1970 publication “Descriptive Catalog of E.S. Frost & Co’s, Hooked Rug Patterns”. SIZE: 2’3″ x 4’2″. PROVENANCE: From a fine Concord, Massachusetts home. CONDITION: Remains structurally intact, with good pile. Colors with even fading. Mounted on a black cloth backing. 9-27940 (1,500-2,500)
