GEORGE CATLIN (American, 1796-1872) RARE PAIR OF REVERSE PAINTED SILHOUETTES. Circa 1827, Philadelphia. The reverse paintings on glass depicting a military officer in full dress uniform, the second portrait a female in bonnet with lace collar and earrings. Both in profile, and painted within an oval frame with gold guilt spandrels, each bearing the signature “G. Catlin, 1827″. The officer identified within the oval, the writing indistinct. Each housed in an ebonized molded frame of the period. Note: George Catlin first established himself as a miniature portrait painted in Philadelphia. These works were done shortly before he began his western pilgrimage, during which he painted Native Americans, for which he is best known. SIZE: 6-3/4″ x 4-1/2″. Overall: 9-1/2″ x 7-1/2”. CONDITION: Both works in very good overall condition. Retaining vibrant colors. Frames with wear and with paint touch ups. 9-27804 (1,200-1,500)
