COLT 4TH MODEL 1851 NAVY REVOLVER.

COLT 4TH MODEL 1851 NAVY REVOLVER. SN 103110. Cal. 36. Blue & color case hardened with 7-1/2″ oct bbl, brass pin front sight and 1-line New-York U.S. America address with dashes. Left side of frame has a small “COLTS PATENT” and the silver plated large guard brass trigger guard & back strap contain a varnished 1-pc walnut grip with last four digits of SN in back strap channel. Cyl is usual 6-shots with Ormsby naval battle scene and five of six safety pins serviceable. Navy revolvers in this serial range were almost universally used through the Civil War and later on the frontier. They saw hard & continuous service under usually dreadful conditions with little or no maintenance and are rarely found today in orig configuration with high orig finish such as this one. These revolvers continued in service well into the 1870s and even 1880s in the hands of some famous & infamous frontier individuals. Wild Bill Hickock was known to have carried a pair of ’51 Navies right up until his death. There are numerous other recorded instances of famous gunmen & lawmen using the ’51 Navy to great effect. The design of the ’51 Navy was such that very little improvement could be made and was, in fact, copied extensively by the Confederacy and numerous manufacturers in Europe. CONDITION: Very fine, all matching including wedge, cyl & grip. Bbl & cyl retain 60-70% glossy orig blue with balance flaked, not worn, to a light patina. There is one small cleaned area on cylinder. Rammer & handle retain about all of their strong orig case colors, very bright on pivot, darker on handle. Frame & hammer retain virtually all of their very bright orig case colors, faded on left recoil shield. Grip frame retains about all of its orig silver plating with wear on heel and thinning on back strap. Grip has a couple of minor gouges & bruises with light handling & use nicks & scratches and retains virtually all of its orig factory varnish.
