RARE GOVT CONTRACT COLT MODEL 1861 NAVY PERCUSSION REVOLVER. SN 4508. Cal. 36. Blue & color case hardened with 7-1/2″ rnd bbl, German silver front sight and 1-line New-York U.S. America address. Left side of frame has a small “COLTS PATENT” and left shoulder of trigger guard has caliber marking. Brass grip frame was never silver plated and contains a 1-pc walnut grip with SN in back strap channel. Only 2,000 of these revolvers were purchased by the Ordnance Dept., they are rarely found today in orig configuration with high orig finish. The early models, such as this one, were used throughout the Civil War and later on the frontier under harsh circumstances with limited maintenance. Consignor states this gun will letter as a Govt Contract revolver shipped in 1861 to the Ordnance Dept. CONDITION: Fine to very fine, all matching except wedge which is a replacement. Bbl retains 50-60% thinning orig blue with balance a blue/gray patina and an area of fine pitting on right side by front sight. There are numerous small nicks around wedge slot on right side. Rammer pivot retains strong case colors with the handle faded to silver. Frame retains most of its orig factory case colors, strong & bright on sides, slightly faded on outer radius of left recoil shield. Hammer retains faded case colors. Cyl is a silver/gray patina with numerous small nicks & dings and retains 60-70% Ormsby naval battle scenes. There are a couple of wide drag lines around cylinder adjacent to the stop notches. Trigger guard & back strap are a mellow mustard patina. Grip has a small chip on left side by frame, otherwise is sound with light handling & use nicks & scratches and retains most of its orig oil finish. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore with a few spots of pitting. 4-40022 JR125 (7,500-12,500)
