COLT 4TH MODEL 1851 NAVY PERCUSSION REVOLVER. SN 103189. Cal. 36. Blue & color case hardened with 7-1/2″ oct bbl, brass pin front sight and 1-line New-York U.S. America address with dashes. Navy revolvers in this serial range were almost universally used through the Civil War and later on the American frontier and around the world. They saw hard & continuous service under usually dreadful conditions with little or no maintenance and are rarely found today in orig configuration with high orig finish such as this one. These revolvers continued in service well into the 1870s and even 1880s in the hands of some famous & infamous frontier individuals. Wild Bill Hickock was known to have carried a pair of ’51 Navys right up until his death. There are numerous other recorded instances of famous gunmen & lawmen using the ’51 Navy to great effect. The design of the ’51 Navy was such that very little improvement could be made and was, in fact, copied extensively by the Confederacy and numerous manufacturers in Europe. CONDITION: Extremely fine, all matching including wedge, cyl & grip. Bbl retains about 90% glossy orig blue with flaking that has turned medium patina. Rammer & handle retain strong orig case colors, bright on pivot, dark on handle. Frame & hammer retain most of their strong orig factory case colors with fading on left recoil shield and sides of hammer. Case colors are the earlier more dull type and never were brilliant. Cyl retains 75-80% strong orig blue with flaking to light patina and shows 94-96% Ormsby Naval battle scene. Trigger guard & back strap retain most of their strong orig silver plating showing wear at the heel and some minor flaking on back strap. One frame/bbl pin is broken. Grip is sound with a few minor dings and light scratches and retains most of its orig factory varnish. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 4-40641 JR145 (6,500-10,500)
